Update- April 2022 Diabetes Screening Project
We were excited to be back in the Dominican Republic April 2-9th with a team after being away for 2 years due COVID. This trip we partnered with GO MAD today and was really excited to be in 4 new communities and had an education team that spent time in 9 classrooms in 2 different communities. Most mornings, we started by learning about the community from our translators. We would walk around greeting people and telling them we would be there to test for diabetes and hypertension. When we were not in clinic the team spent time at Monkey Jungle, Mundo King Castle, and Kite Beach. Thanks to donors we were able to bring 40 blood pressure cuffs and stethoscopes down for clinics throughout the country that did not have these basic supplies.
We are looking forward to our next team trip this November 5-12th. Please click on the Get Involved on the main page to find out more information.
Update- November Diabetes Screening Project
This years project was an exciting blur! We had a total of 16 US based volunteers that joined our team. The first night we were in Sosua, leadership team was invited to Sosua Rotary International meeting. We were immediately welcomed and made some wonderful new friendships. Some of the local members of the rotary helped us the whole week with translating, organizing the people when we first arrived to clinic, as well as interviewing the leadership team on local tv news.
We held a total of 7 clinics, expanding in 4 new communities, and part of the team helped with work at a local community center. Approximately 400 people were screened and a third of those people had uncontrolled diabetes. Education and supplies were given to patients with an additional 6 months of supplies and medications were left with Drs and medical clinics for patients to follow up. We also met other humanitarian groups staying at Sosua By The Sea and discussed how we could join forces and help each other and the people of Dominican Republic.
We want to thank all of our volunteers, their families, and our donors as this trip would not have been a success without you. I hope each of you will take time to look at the pictures below.
We look forward to what the next year brings and hope you will consider being a part of Hispaniola Cares. Let us know how you would like to help!

November 2018
This November we held 4 clinics in 4 different locations in the Dominican Republic. We screened over 300 people for diabetes and 100 tested positive. Each person received an education folder which included a specific diabetic cookbook in Spanish, monitor and supplies to check their sugars on a daily basis for 6 months.
On this trip we also did a dental needs assessment to gather data and see if there was a dental need. Our findings were astonishing! We screened over 250 people in 4 days with most people requiring either extractions or teeth to be restored. We are working on getting a dental clinic to expand and provide dental services for our next project.
We were also recognized in the Sosua News for our devoted efforts in our fight against Type 2 Diabetes.
Hispaniola Cares would like to thank all of our donors, the nccPA Health Foundation for awarding us the Be the Change Grant, and to our amazing team of volunteers who took time from families and work to care for the people of Dominican Republic; we would not have been able to screen and provide so many supplies without all of you.
This trip showed that every person has the power to do good and we can do more good together.
